This page provides an overview of the core gameplay systems in Welcome to Elderfield. Each section contains a brief summary with links to more detailed pages where available.

Day/Night Cycle

A full day/night cycle lasts approximately 20 minutes in real time. At 12:00 AM, the game automatically rolls over into a new day regardless of whether the player has gone to sleep. During this transition, a moon event is triggered, and the type of moon determines what events will occur to the player.

Bathing

Bathing will fully restore HP and MP, clear most blessings and curses, regenerate all monsters and mysteries. Once a week bathing regenerates resources (Forage, Mines).

Combat

Welcome to Elderfield features RPG combat against various monsters and creatures found throughout the world. The player can equip weapons obtained through Forging or purchased from Shops. Experience and items are earned during fights and can be used to enhance the player's farm or equipment.

Die Rolls

Die rolls are a core mechanic that influence several game systems, including Mysteries and sleep events. When a die roll is triggered, the outcome is influenced by the player's Luck stat. Mysteries are one of the few die roll events which can have hidden 0 and 7 results.

Farming, Fishing, Foraging, Husbandry & Mining

The player can grow crops and raise animals on the Farm, go fishing at various locations using different bait types, and explore mines with shifting layouts and hidden secrets. Animal products and crops can be processed into artisan goods.

Cooking, Crafting & Forging

The player's home contains a kitchen for Cooking food to sustain exploration. Crafting allows the player to create various useful items, while Forging is one of the primary methods to obtain upgraded equipment. Additional crafting stations such as the Juicer, Food Processor, and Casks become available as the player purchases the blueprints from shops or progresses through the game.

Sleep Events

Sleeping is, supposedly, optional in Elderfield. Going to bed can trigger random events, both good and bad. Sleep events are a separate system from Moon Events, which occur at midnight, regardless of whether the player sleeps.

Tax System

The Tax Man periodically arrives in Elderfield, signaled by the appearance of the Pale Moon and Tax Fog in town. The Tax Man requires the player to deliver specific items requested from his previous visit. The Tax Man can give either a blessing or curse depending on the players ability to deliver the requested tax.

Stats

The player has several stats including HP, MP, and Luck. HP and MP can be fully restored by bathing at the player's home, through a Soul Moon, or a sleep event. Luck influences the outcome of die rolls throughout the game, including Mysteries and other chance-based events.
